Despite slide, Golden Eagles looking forward
USU Eastern men to host SWAC foes Salt Lake CC and Snow College this week
After defeating Snow College 74-61 on Jan. 9, the Golden Eagles were flying high.
They were ranked in the top 15 of the NJCAA polls and were at the top of the Scenic West Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record.
But as quickly as they got to the top of the conference, the Golden Eagles have become grounded. Four conference losses followed with the latest coming in a tough 84-80 loss to Colorado Northwestern CC on Jan. 25.
USU Eastern Head Coach Adjalma Becheli said the team has shot the ball poorly which has resulted in lost scoring opportunities. He cited the Golden Eagles' 19-of-40 (47.5 percent) free throw shooting performance against CNCC as a reason for the loss.
"We're playing selfishly right now and against CNCC we just fell apart," said Becheli.
Protecting their home floor is a key for the Golden Eagles going forward as they will play five straight home games starting with a game against Salt Lake CC on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
"Coming home to play should help us as a team," said Becheli. "The guys know we need to win these next two games."
Becheli said he believes the team will put the losing streak behind them and move forward.
"We have our backs against the wall," he said. "We need to fight to change the situation we are in right now."
