When senior Shelby Cornforth picked up her second foul less than two minutes into Carbon High's 3A First Round game with Juan Diego on Friday evening, CHS Head Coach Ted Bianco his first challenge. He quickly called upon sophomore Morgan Hillam to help fill Cornforth's spot.

Hillam responded and then some.

The sophomore scored seven of her 11 total points in the first half helping give Carbon a boost when it needed it the most in their 33-31 win.

While she knew at some point her named would be called to help out the team, Hillam concentrated on just playing her part in helping out.

"I just told myself I needed to step up when Shelby went out," said Hillam.

Hillam was also asked to defend the Mills sisters, Monique and Dominique, at various times through the game which was no easy task.

Her totals of 11 points and eight rebounds were both season bests for the sophomore.

"Morgan was the first one off the bench and she proceeded to have her best game of the season," said Bianco.

With the team struggling on offense through the first three quarters, Hillam said Bianco pushed the team to keep working hard on defense and find good open looks down low on offense.

"Coach Bianco just kept telling us to pick things up on defense and finally in the fourth quarter we started getting our shots to fall," said Hillam.

Bianco's words of wisdom during those time outs proved to be key as Hillam stole an in-bounds pass with less than a minute left to help set up Jordan Scoggins' go-ahead basket giving Carbon their first lead since halftime.

Making the comeback after being down 10 points in the fourth quarter and having the best game of her varsity career in the process, it's a win and an experience Hillam won't soon forget.

"It was the best feeling of my life," Hillam said of the upset win.
