Just over one week ago, the Carbon High Lady Dinos found themselves fighting just to get into the playoffs.

One week and two wins later, Carbon High is looking to continue upon that success when they head down to Cedar City for the 3A Quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 27.

Carbon defeated Payson 40-33 last Tuesday in a tiebreaker game for the rights to the Region 12 three seed. After that hard fought win, Carbon went toe-to-toe with Region 10 two seed Juan Diego on their home floor. Despite all of the odds, including a 10 point deficit with five minutes left in the game, Carbon went on a 15-3 run to close out the game and pick up the 33-31 upset win over the favored Soaring Eagle on Friday evening in Draper.

CHS Head Coach Ted Bianco called the win over Juan Diego "one of the best ever" as a coach.

It was a gusty and gritty win for the team," Bianco said after the game.

Carbon helped get the win not only with the final run at the end, but also with their tough defense and rebounding against a tough and tall frontline from Juan Diego.

The Lady Dinos also received big contributions from three underclassmen. Sophomore Morgan Hillam had her best varsity game of the year with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Scoggins had five points, including a runner from the baseline that gave Carbon the lead for good. And freshman Lindsey Blanc scored all three of her points from the free throw line over the final minute of the game.

"The kids grew up tonight," Bianco said.

With the win, Carbon has advanced to the 3A Quarterfinals in each of Bianco's three seasons as head coach for the team.

Now the Lady Dinos must put all of that behind them and prepare for the challenges that await them in Cedar City.

Carbon will take on Region 9 four seed Cedar on Thursday at 5:50 p.m at the Centrum Arena on the campus of Southern Utah University.

Carbon and Cedar have meet in the 3A Tournament before. In 2011, the two teams met in a thriller that saw Carbon escape with a 58-57 win in double overtime. Carbon reached the championship game that year before losing to Emery High.

Senior Shelby Cornforth said that she and fellow senior, Annika Hansen, don't want the season to end anytime soon.

"We didn't want to play in our last game," Cornforth said after the win over Juan Diego.

Cornforth said the Lady Dinos are hoping to continue as far in the tournament as possible.

"We just want to do our best and play well at the state tournament," she said.
