First meet of season a success for Carbon High Track and Field
Boys and girls teams combine to finish in second place behind host Grand at the Grand Invitational
If the first meet is any indication, then the Carbon High Track and Field team may be in store for a big season.
The boys and girls teams both combined to finish in second place overall at the Grand Invitational in Moab on Saturday.
CHS Head Coach James Jewkes said a number of Carbon athletes posted strong performances in the first meet of the season. Jewkes said going into the meet that the coaches were focusing on trying to find the right events for the athletes that best utilizes their abilities.
"Our team did really well in Moab," he said. "The freshmen stepped up and many of our other athletes finished at the top of their event."
Jewkes noted the performance of the Girls High Jumpers, who placed five out of the top six in the competition. High jumper Abbi Powell qualified for state with a jump of 4'11", according to Jewkes.
"This team has a lot of potential and they're going to work hard to keep getting better and better," he said.
The team has a quick turnaround as they will travel to Richfield on Wednesday to participate in a meet before hosting a home meet on March 22.
