Lady Dinos golfers pick up early season win
The Carbon High girls golf team took a big lead and never looked back collecting a big victory in Richfield on Tuesday, March 18.
Carbon built a big lead in the opening region tournament. The Lady Dinos traveled to Richfield on Tuesday to play the first tournament of the season against Richfield, Payson, Juab and North Sanpete.
Lead by the tournament medalist, Katie Felice, the girls came away with a convincing 47 point victory. Girls golf is scored on a modified Stableford scoring system where scores are asigned a point value; par-5 points, bogey-4, dbl bogey-3, etc... Teams consist of six girls and the top four scores are counted.
Carbon was able to post a team total of 140 points. Katie Felice lead the team and the tournament with 39 points on the 9 hole match. Hailey Kirkwood added to the total with 37 and Braxton Gibson and Kaycee Gilson rounded out the total with 33 and 31 points respectively. Richfield placed second with a team score of 93. Juab was third with 86 points, North Sanpete 70 and Payson 40.
"It was a good win for the girls and I am very proud," said CHS Head Coach Kenji Otani. "I have my entire varsity team from last year returning and we have added some good young talent. This team has big expectations and a lot is expected, from them."
On Wednesday the Lady Dinos found themselves in Moab playing a match against Spanish Fork. The girls fell to Spanish by three points, 130 to 127.
In a tough match Katie Felice makes 38 points to lose medalist honors by one shot. Hailey Kirkwood made 25 points. Braxton Gibson comes in with 33 points and Kaycee Gilson makes 31.
"Spanish is always tough, but we gave them a good run. With a couple of the girls struggling a little, on a course we have never seen, my girls ground it out and held their own against a good 4A school. We are going to have a good season. I'm very excited," said Otani.
