With season on the line, Lady Dinos come through to stay alive in 3A Tournament play
With the team in a prolonged slump, the Carbon High Lady Dinos were looking for anything they could find to breakout and get a win.
In a First Round game with host Cedar, Carbon fell behind early and hurt themselves with five errors on defense resulting in a 7-0 loss.
In the one-loss bracket, the Dinos matched up with Juan Diego. CHS Head Coach Kirt Nunley said the team came into the game with a different mentality that was visible with their play on the field and at the plate.
Behind a strong pitching performance from McKenna Sorenson and a rock solid defense, the Carbon offense came alive with a home run from Katie Basinger and doubles from Lauren Rice and Taylor Passarella for a 4-2 win to advance in the tournament.
"The girls just had that mentality of enough is enough," said Nunley. "They had swag and they looked ready to play and it showed with the win."
Nunley said the Lady Dinos had an opportunity to take the lead against Cedar but they couldn't get a run to home plate.
That may have helped give the team the extra motivation they needed to pull away with a win over Juan Diego when they needed it the most.
Carbon will now play the loser of Canyon View/Uintah on Thursday, May 15 at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex at 5 p.m. If Carbon wins that game, they would advance to play again on Friday, May 16.
