No serious injuries, US 6 traffic detoured for more than 3 hours

A chain reaction crash involved seven vehicles total, including two semi trucks, closed down U.S. 6 near the junction with Highway 123 for more than three hours on Tuesday morning.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant David Bennion, a FedEx triple-trailer semi truck traveling eastbound came upon a construction zone with traffic stopped in the same direction as construction crews were resurfacing the roadway near milepost 257. The driver realized he would not be able to stop in time, Bennion explained, so he purposely drove the truck into the ditch on the opposite side of the road with the trailers sideswiping four vehicles, that were stopped due to the construction, in the process.

A second semi following the FedEx truck was unable to stop in time as well, causing another accident by crashing into the back of a pickup truck, Bennion said.

Construction crews in the area were alternating opening lanes to move traffic through the construction zone through the day before the crash happened.

The highway was shut down in both directions for more than three hours, Bennion said. Traffic was being diverted through the Highway 123 throughout the cleanup. Traffic slowly began to move through the accident scene as multiple tow trucks worked to pull the cars and the FedEx truck and trailers out of the ditch.

The driver and the co-driver in the FedEx truck were among a handful of people injured in the crash. Four people total were transported to Castleview Hospital with minor injuries, according to Bennion.

The driver of the FedEx truck and the driver of the semi following behind were cited. Bennion said the FedEx driver was cited for failure to obey a construction zone flagger and traveling too fast for conditions while the semi truck driver was cited for following too closely.
