Helper advances to Utah American Legion Championship Game
The Helper American Legion Baseball team will get a shot at defending their state title after defeating Trappers Orange 4-3 on Wednesday evening in Logan.
Helper took advantage of a Trappers Orange error on a Marco Mota pop fly in the infield in the bottom of the ninth inning that fell to the ground between the catcher and the pitcher. That allowed base runner Cole Fossat, who was running on the play, to score, helping to send Helper back to the championship game for the second straight season.
Helper trailed Trappers Orange 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. In the inning, Dillon Wilstead hit a leadoff double and later scored on a groundball, sliding safely into home plate beating out a throw to tie the game at 3-3.
With the win, Helper is in the championship game from the winner's bracket. They will play the winner of St. George/Trappers Orange from the one loss bracket at 7 p.m. tonight (July 31) at the Logan High Baseball Field.
If Helper wins, they would be the state champions for the second consecutive year. If Helper loses, a second game would be played on Friday at Logan High with a time yet to be determined.
The winner will represent the state of Utah in the Western Regional Tournament held in Surprise, Arizona starting on August 7.
