Walk-off home run sends Helper to state semis
Fossat's homer in 9th gets Helper one step closer to state title game with 4-2 win over St. George
In the American Legion State Baseball Tournament anything can happen.
And Helper, with its vast experience of playing at state, knows this very well.
With a quarterfinal game against St. George tied at 2-2 entering extra innings, Helper continued playing their style of good pitching and strong defense while hoping that the offense would eventually break through.
And Cole Fossat made sure it did for Helper.
Fossat's ninth inning two-run home run gave Helper a 4-2 walk-off win over St. George on Monday evening in Logan.
The win moved the defending state champions into the semifinals of the winners bracket with a Wednesday night game against the Trappers Orange. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening but was pushed back due to rain.
Helper quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Marco Mota. They added another run in the second inning after Dominic Rondinelli doubled and later scored following a passed ball and a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Helper kept the lead behind six strong innings from starter Jarod Lessar.
St. George finally broke through against Lessar with a walk followed by two doubles to tie the game at 2-2.
Fossat came in relief for Lessar helped keep the game tied going into extra innings, said Helper Head Coach Jeff Cisneros.
Both teams had their chances as the game went into extra innings, but no one could capitalize on them.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Helper opened the inning with two straight strikeouts. Ridge Nielson walked which set the stage for Fossat's walk-off home run over the left field fence.
Cisneros said he "couldn't be prouder" with how his team has played in the state tournament.
"Our pitching and defense has been wonderful and we seem to be getting the job done at the plate," Cisneros said.
