Superstitious players make key change before big game

Baseball players are notorious for their rituals and habits before, during or after games. So it was no surprise to see many of the Helper American Legion Baseball players following suit over the final weeks of the season.

For those who saw the team in action over the final week of the season leading into the state tournament, could notice some mustaches growing on the faces of a handful of Helper players and coaches.

They kept letting it grow into the tournament as the games passed with Helper continuing to pile up the wins. Helper catcher Colton Greener said the players even used a little coloring to help make their mustaches more apparent than before.

Whatever the case, with each win, the mustaches stayed.

But after struggling in a difficult 8-0 loss to St. George on Thursday evening that forced a deciding game the following day for the Utah State Championship, Greener and the others with mustaches, including Assistant Coach Derek Young and outfielder Mark DeBry, quickly made a change that same night.

"We got rid of them real quick that night," said Greener.

Superstitious or not, Helper came out more determined on Friday culminating with a 9-0 win to claim their second straight state title.
