Pinnacle's offense, defense and pitching tested against tough competition in Richfield

The Pinnacle High Panthers Baseball team wasted no time in getting back into the fray with tough competition at the Richfield Tournament to open the 2014 season.

Pinnacle went 1-2 at the tournament playing against top teams including Tintic, Valley and Wayne over the course of two days last week.

Pinnacle came out firing on all cylinders scoring nine runs in the first inning of their game with Tintic.

The pitching and defense helped keep Tintic in check as the Panthers opened with a 14-6 win, according to PHS Head Coach Cameron Gardner.

The second game was a complete difference than the first as Pinnacle, led by pitcher Isaiah Martinez, and Valley kept each other scoreless through the first four innings. But in the fifth inning Valley got a run thanks to a steal of home plate that was the deciding play in a 1-0 loss for the Panthers.

Pinnacle ended the tournament with a tough 20-0 loss to Wayne that Gardner described as a "long and rough game for us".

Despite that, Gardner said he was pleased with the start to the season and the play of many on the team.

"The kids played really hard and we had a lot of guys contribute in a lot of different ways at the tournament," said Gardner.

Pinnacle will travel to Panguitch on Friday and Saturday where they will take on teams including Bryce Valley, Panguitch and Piute.
