Carbon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue divers recovered the body of a 33-year-old Herriman man from Scofield Reservoir early Sunday. The victim, Jaran Cruz, had drowned in a canoeing accident Saturday evening.

Chief Deputy Tom Stefanoff reported that Cruz had been in a 14-foot craft with two other men when the canoe capsized shortly before 6:50 p.m. There were no life jackets aboard.

Deputies, Carbon County Ambulance, Helper Rescue 3 and Utah State Parks officers all responded to the scene. Witnesses told deputies they had seen the victim in distress and calling for help. One of his companions managed to swim to shore while the other stayed with the capsized canoe. Cruz tried to swim to shore but did not make it.

Several people in boats were unable to find Cruz after he disappeared.

The Search and Rescue dive team went out with a State Parks officers. Their boat, equipped with side sonar, found the victim about 100 feet from shore in water about 20 feet deep at 12:04 a.m.

Stefanoff reported that the victim's body was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office.
