Satisfying win, tough loss for Dinos
By TERRY WILLIS Sun Advocate sports reporter
As caoch Ted Bianco stated, "In region 10 there is Wasatch and there is the rest." This week's play showed how true that is. Union came to the Dino house and left with a 77-69 loss. But Wasatch came calling and easily downed the Dinos 66-38 to stay undefeated in the region.
Carbon opened with a 14-2 run before the Cougars regrouped. The Dinos held on to a six point lead at the end of the first. They went on to open it up to a 14 point gap by the break. The Dinos had a slow third and Union closed it up. Late in the fourth suddenly saw the Cougars make one final run and put the win for the Dinos in jeopardy. But Carbon tightened up their defense and hit some final shots in the stretch to take the win by eight.
Clint Finkbiner outscored everyone with 26 points and five threes. Keny Seals put up 16 and Daniel Peczuh made four threes for all of his 12. Beau Rich finished with 11.
"Union got on fire at the end, but we got tough and got the stops we needed and kept our composure to finish them off," added Coach Bianco after it was over.
But the composure was not there on Friday night when the Wasps stepped out on the floor. Early jitters led to Dino turnovers and hurried shots and soon they were in a hole deep.
By the half Wasatch had doubled up the Dinos for a 40-20 score. The night never got any better and in the end it was 28 points that separated the two teams.
Justin Child was the only Dino in double figures with 10 points on a night that nothing seemed to drop for Carbon.
"Wasatch proved that they are as good as everyone says. I just wish we would have responded better. Our kids came out with the right intentions, but with the size of their opponents they couldn't get any rebounds and we rushed to get shots off. We missed stuff we usually make," said Bianco of the result.
But he has already turned his attention to the work that still needs to be done. Second place is wide open and he has his eye on that spot.
Park City is up next and Bianco feels like his team can beat them. They lost by a heart breaker over on Park City earlier and want to take this match-up.
Game time for Friday will be at 7 p.m. in the Carbon High gym.
