Carbon hosts Region 8 wrestling championships

Dirt Howa from Carbon High takes down his opponent during the Region 8 championship tourney last week.

The Carbon High School gym was the place to be last Friday as the Region 8 wrestling championship tournament was hosted in Price. The event allowed athletes from across the state to compete for a chance to move on to the state tournament which will take place Thursday through Saturday at UVSC in Orem.

The Carbon Dinos had a successful showing as six of its athletes captured a seed in the state finals.

As a team, Carbon placed fourth out of the five Region 8 teams with a total of 182.5 points.

Trent Greenhalgh placed third in the 103 pound weigh class and will now move on to represent the Dino club at state. Greenhalgh captured the third place finish by defeating Jared Shephard of Delta by a major decision of 12-1.

In the 112 pound weight class, Nathan Horrocks captured a third place finish by pinfall over Todd Christensen of Delta. The pin came five minutes into the match.

Zach Burdick captured the first place finish in the 119 pound weight class. Burdick clinched the victory by a 11-6 decision over Tyson Church of North Sanpete in the final round.

Finishing in third place in the 135 pound weight class was Dino, Dustin Howa. After defeating Jordan Seely of North Sanpete by a 7-5 decision, Howa now moves on to compete for the state title in his weight division.

Brett Riche captured the third place finish in the 145 pound weight class. Riche walked away victorious from a 6-4 decision over Brent Beck of North Sanpete.

Jan Jorgensen captured a first place finish in the 215 pound weight class by a major decision of 16-7 over Sheldon Holgreen of North Sanpete.

Aside from the athletes who will move on to compete in the Class 3A tournament this week, the remainder of the Dino wrestling squad competed strong in the region tourney adding to the clubs final standings in the region.
