Spartans hand Dinos large rivalry loss
Emery uses fast-break offense and experience edge in 29-point win
It may have been two days after Christmas, but the Emery High Spartans waited a little longer to give the Carbon High Dinos a gift.
That gift turned out to a be a gut punch during a 66-37 loss in the first of the two games between the rivals.
Emery wasted little time as they grabbed an early lead thanks to a number of fast-break opportunities on steals of Carbon High passes on the offensive end.
Emery took a 35-16 lead into halftime and never looked back throughout the second half.
Emery outscored Carbon 15-6 in the third quarter. Carbon was finally able to string together a few baskets in the fourth quarter but it came too late.
Cole Fossat led the Dinos with 8 points, including two 3-pointers in the game. The Dinos saw 11 different players score in the game with their point totals ranging from eight points to one point each.
Emery (7-2) had three players finish in double digits in scoring, led by Dillon Willstead's game-high 17 points. Bailey Faimalo added 14 points and 12 assists.
Carbon (1-10) will look to turn things around as they will host South Sevier on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. The Dinos will travel to Emery on Jan. 8 before they open Region 12 play on the road at North Sanpete on Jan. 15.
