Tabby Cummins, seen here during last years state playoffs, was the leading scorer for the Lady Dinos last Tuesday with 17 points.

Carbon Girls Basketball team opened their season last Tuesday in Richfield with the Hall of Fame Game and in doing so put away a good Beaver team 45 to 23.

The game is sponsored each year by the Utah Prep Coaches Association to honor the 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A championship teams. In these games, which are the first of the year for all teams involved, the 3A champion from last season plays the 2A champion and the 4A champs play the 5A winners.

Even though Beaver is a 2A team, it is a good squad. Beaver has won nine state championships since 1994.

Carbon struggled with its offense against Beaver only scoring seven points in the first quarter. Because it is early in the season Coach Bruce Bean wasn't too concerned with the scoring effort however.

Senior Tabby Cummins was the leading scorer with 17 points. Meesha Rasmussen contributed nine points with Danielle Martino adding eight. Other scorers included Megan Garvin with three, Jamie King with four, Amie Stewart putting in two, and Kim Bunnell added two.

Defense is where Carbon shined, holding Beaver to under 10 points for each quarter, Coach Bean felt like it was a total team effort.

If Carbon can continue to excel with its defense, it will give the offensive side of the game time to mature.

Carbon is using a seven player rotation for now. It consists of six seniors and one underclassman. Coach Bean is hoping that the younger players will step up soon. Carbon will need to have more depth on its bench if it hopes to repeat as 3A champion this year.

This year the upstate media have predicted that Carbon will not have the run of Region 8 like they have in the past few years. In fact last week Emery was voted as the number one team in the state 3A with Morgan just behind them. Carbon was not ranked in the top five.

However the Lady Dinos will be tough and only the season will really tell the tale. Most coaches and players know that preseason rankings really have little to do with what happens on the court.

As for the game last week Bean said he thought Tabby Cummins would be his pick as player of the game.
